As much as the church loves to use the term “volunteer,” as believers in Christ “volunteering” is not an option. Paul teaches that the church is designed to function as a body with each of us given different talents and gifts (Romans 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12). These talents and gifts are to be used to love God and love one another working together with one heart and purpose. We do this by being servants. Jesus said that he came not to be served, but serve others; that greatness is found in being a servant to the people (Mark 10:41-45). Jesus shows us what this looks like as He washed the disciples feet at the last supper (John 13:1-20). As believers we don’t have the option to “volunteer.”
